Gatlinburg is one of the most significant tourist destinations in the state of Tennessee. Within its borders are numerous man-made shows and attractions and it also borders the most traveled National park in the USA: the Great Smoky Mountains National Park with more than 9 million visitors per year. Overlooking the city is the Ober Gatlinburg ski resort and an amusement park. It happens to be the only ski slopes with chair lifts in Tennessee, there are 8 ski trails the longest almost 1 mile in length and 3 chair lifts. Access to the slopes is through normal paved roads with year round access and an aerial tram that travels 2.7 miles up the mountains originating from the Gatlinburg parkway. There is a privately-funded public transit system which includes the Gatlinburg Trolley that shuttles the droves of tourists which descend upon the city of Gatlinburg by the thousands.
